"Given its size, remote sensing is the best way to study the Amazon Basin on a large scale, especially to assess the extent and damage of deforestation," ESA said in a statement.
The image, captured by Envisat satellite between January 2, February 1 and March 3 and processed by ESA, shows how the river enters an area, forming a series of meanders on its way.
A photograph of Juruá, largest tributary of the Amazon River, is one of the last images produced by Envisat satellite on which the ESA lost control on April 8, still have not managed to retrieve it.

A Agência Espacial Europeia (ESA, na sigla em inglês) selecionou uma fotografia de satélite do rio Juruá adentrando a Floresta Amazônica como a imagem da semana.
"Dado seu tamanho, a detecção remota é a melhor maneira de estudar a Bacia do Amazonas em grande escala, especialmente para avaliar a amplitude e o dano do desmatamento", indicou a ESA em comunicado.A imagem, capturada pelo satélite Envisat entre 2 de janeiro, 1º de fevereiro e 3 de março e processada pela ESA, mostra como o rio penetra em uma área, formando uma série de meandros em sua passagem.
A fotografia do Juruá, maior afluente do rio Amazonas, é uma das últimas imagens produzidas pelo Envisat, satélite sobre o qual a ESA perdeu controle em 8 de abril sem ainda ter conseguido recuperá-lo.
